This was a disappointing game for the Colorado Avalanche. The Avs came into this game on a three-game winning streak, and they even managed to score the first goal (Nathan MacKinnon). Unfortunately, just 31 seconds later, Brandon Saad took advantage of some confusion in the Avalanche crease and scored his eighth of the year. Erik Johnson scored his 6th goal in 6 games to give the Avs their second lead of the game…but then Patrick Kane tied things up again a few minutes later. In the second period, Brent Seabrook scored for the Hawks to give them their first lead of the game.
During the third, it looked like the Avalanche were going to try and tie things up, at least get a point, and then Patrick Sharp scored a goal for the Hawks. Even then, the Avs were given an opportunity on a powerplay, and then given an even greater opportunity as another player for the Hawks was called for a penalty and the team had a chance to play 5 on 3 for a full 40 seconds. The team didn’t really get anything done, even with those golden chances, and in the final few seconds of the game Patrick Kane scored an empty netter.
This was a really disappointing loss, because I think the Avs had won, they would have really gotten on a roll and cut down the point differential between themselves and the teams sitting in playoff positions. As it is, the team is going to have to move on, and have another really good game against the Blues on Monday.
-Erik Johnson scored his 10th goal of the season. His career high is 10 goals in a season…and we still have a solid 47 games left of the season.
-Matt Duchene hooked Patrick Kane in a rather uncomfortable region as Kane went to score his empty netter. This lead to a bit of a scuffle with 5 seconds to go in the game.
-By my count, the Avs hit the post/crossbar four different times.
-Brad Stuart was pretty awful tonight. Better than Nick Holden has been, but still pretty bad.
-The Avs had 10 giveaways.
