The Manchester Derby

This Sunday will mark the 153th Manchester Derby, the match held between Manchester United and Manchester City. The derby began on November 12 1881, when West Gordon (now Manchester City) hosted Newton Health (now Manchester United).  United currently holds overall record at 60-49-43, but City has won 3 of the last 4 by a combined 10 goals to United’s 6. This season, however, both teams have come out hot, with Manchester City sitting atop the table with 21 points through 9 games, and Manchester United remains in 3rd place with 19 points through 9 games. Sergio Agüero is a threat to the Red Devil defense, as he in second place in Premier League goal scorers with 6. However, Manchester United’s Juan Mata also has started this 2015-2016 campaign strong with 3 goals through 9 matches, and leads the Red Devils in that category. With this Sunday’s match being help at Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United, the home fans will certainly be packed in, in hopes of their men earning 3 points after 90 minutes. The Reds have struggled at home in the past few years against City, losing 3 of the last 4 home matches. But, there is a different swagger about this United squad rolling into Sunday. With Louis Van Gaal at the helm in his second season as the Red Devils’ manager, he seems to have a great sense of his personnel and how to utilize each player in different situations. This has been on full display this season through his team’s success in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League competitions.

Momentum is a huge part of success in this league, and coming into Sunday, both of these squads possess it. This match will have a different feel to it, as both teams are already in contentions for this season’s title. Two questions remain to be answered: Can the Reds take over first place? Or will City extend its early lead in the table?

Prediction: Manchester City 1 – Manchester United 2
