Steelers Beat Raiders With Last Second Field Goal, Lose Big Ben

The good news is that the Steelers were able to beat the Raiders and DeAngelo Williams ran very well allowing you to forget for at least one week the Steelers are without Le’Veon Bell.   The bad news is, Ben Roethlisberger was taken to the locker room in the second half, then off the grounds to have his left ankle/foot evaluated.   He was not able to put any weight on it at all at any point. When the smoke cleared today,  The final score was Steelers 38-35.

So there is no real news on Ben yet, so I will not even speculate other than to say, if he is injured and out for any time, the season if not over before, will be now.

As for Le’Veon Bell’s back up DeAngelo Williams, all he did today was carry the ball 27 times for 170 yards.   He was marvelous and the Raiders had not answers for him.  They let him get into the second and third levels time and time again.  They really did not even tackle him in most cases, they chased him out of bounds most of the day.

Big Ben would have a huge first half with Antonio Brown.  In the second half, the Raiders would tie the game at 21 and things started to feel ominous for the Steelers.  Big Ben would add to that feel as he would throw an interception in his own territory, giving the Raiders great field position.

That is when the Steelers D would get a big fumble and recovery.  The Defense had a mixed kind of day as they would get big stops and turnovers, then other times give up big plays

After that fumble and recovery,The Steelers would drive down the field only to see their kicker miss his first of the season.  That would leave the game tied at 21.  The Steelers defense would then hold the Raiders to a 3 and out on their next possession.

Ben Roethlisberger, DeAngelo Williams, and Antonio Brown would go back to work driving the Steelers down the field.  Though, this time the Steelers would get into the end zone as Martavis Bryant, who had dropped a TD pass earlier would score on a nifty move after catch.  A ten yard play that would give the Steelers a 28-21 lead.

The Steelers would get the ball back quickly as the special teams would cause a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, that would give Pittsburgh a first down at the 6 yard line.  They would of course convert that to extend their lead to 35-21.  It would be a pass reception by Local kid, Glassport PA native Jesse James.  Something I am sure he will not forget for some time.   James was a 5th round draft pick.

The Steelers then had all the momentum, but the defense would give up a 4 play drive that would result in a TD and would cut the lead to just 7 points.  The ominous feel would then set in on the next Steelers possession as Big Ben would take a hit to his ankle or foot and have to be carried off the field, then carted to the locker room.  Later leaving the stadium for further evaluation.

Both teams would exchange punts, but during the Raiders punt, Antonio Brown would fumble and the Raiders would get the ball right back.  But as they did during the most of the game,They would blow yet another opportunity as Derek Carr would throw an interception. They Steelers D came up big again, though in this case it was a very ugly pass.

Landry Jones would take over for Ben and at times put a few nice plays together, but all would be for not as the Steelers would commit penalties to negate any good they were doing.

With less than two and a half minutes left, The Raiders would Eventually tie the game up with a 7 play, 70 yard drive that would take about a minute off the clock It would leave Landry Jones and the Steelers with just over a minute left.

Jones would deliver with help from Antonio Brown as he would take a short pass and turn it into 57 yards that would give the Steelers a first down with 44 seconds left and the ball on the Oakland 15.  The Steelers would run a couple of plays to run the clock down and then with time ticking off the clock, Boswell would convert the game winner.

Antonio Brown would finish the day with 17 receptions for 284 yards receiving.  A ridiculous kind of stats day that would not also include touchdowns. DeAngelo Williams would run for two touchdowns and Big Ben would throw 2 Touchdowns.

The Steelers scored 21 points in the first half, but only 2 touchdowns.  They would convert a two point conversion and kick 2 field goals.  A very unconventional way to get to 21.

The defense did not tackle well today and could not stop this Raiders offense unless they were causing turnovers.   Pittsburgh would combine for 597 total yards and the Raiders would go for 440 yards and 24 first downs.  The Steelers D  would cause 4 turnovers, 3 of which were  fumbles and 1 interception.

We will see how the upcoming week plays out but it does look like the Steelers will be without Ben for the upcoming week at least, unless something fairly miraculous happens.  I know the fan base is looking for something on the miraculous side.
