Roskam: Conor McGregor v.s. Floyd Mayweather

Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather have been hinting at a possible fight in the future. Mayweather and McGregor have even gone as far as posting pictures of mock fight posters. McGregor has been talking trash to Mayweather throughout his career. However, I don’t think this fight will happen.

Conor would have to cancel his UFC contract for this fight to happen. Lorenzo Fortitta (CEO of UFC) and Dana White (UFC President) are huge boxing fanatics. Both Fortitta and White would have to make an accommodation and let this fight happen. I seriously doubt that this is something they would do because of the potential damage this could do to Conor’s image and to the UFC. McGregor is such a big name for them that if he lost, it would make the UFC look bad because that would be their biggest star getting destroyed. This is why the UFC will not let this happen.

If McGregor really did get in a ring with Mayweather, it would be bad for McGregor. Mayweather is arguably the best boxer ever. McGregor only has a little experience in boxing. When McGregor was young, he began boxing at Crumlin boxing club where two-time Olympian Phil Sutcliffe trained. This is where McGregor learned the basics of striking. To go from MMA to boxing is a big change. The only thing that McGregor has going for him is that he has devastating power; all of McGregor’s KO’s have been using that left hand shot. However, Mayweather has been boxing his entire life. Mayweather is a master in the art of boxing – as McGregor is a master in the art of MMA. If Mayweather got in an octagon with McGregor, McGregor would destroy him. McGregor would throw kicks at his legs and body, and Mayweather just isn’t used to that type of fighting. The same goes for McGregor in a ring with Mayweather. Mayweather is so good defensively he would set things up and play with McGregor a little bit, find a hole and exploit it. McGregor is used to being able to move around and have space; when you are boxing there is not a lot of space between you and your opponent. Another way that the two fighting styles differ is in the number of rounds. Boxing has 12 rounds while a UFC title fight has five. Boxing requires more conditioning and endurance because of the number of rounds you must be prepared for. McGregor isn’t used to preparing for that much physicality.

I believe the media has blown this out of proportion- this fight is not going to happen. McGregor would have to decline all of his agreements on his contract just for one fight. McGregor will not agree to this fight because of his passion for MMA. The only reason these athletes are even toying with this idea is because the money would be crazy. This would without a doubt be the biggest fighting event ever. Mayweather and McGregor are two of the biggest stars in fighting today. Do I think this will happen? No. Do I want it to happen? Sure. This would be an entertaining fight to watch, but disastrous for McGregor’s career.
