GolfMonger Preview: Deutsche Bank Championship

The second round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs starts Friday at the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston.  Rickie Fowler is the defending champ this week.  He folded like a cheap lawn chair last week at Bethpage Black playing in the final group with eventual winner Patrick Reed.  Can he bounce back?  Will Reed keep the momentum and win again?

The field has been cut down to 100 players this week.  After this week the field will be reduced down to 70 players.  There are only two weeks left for players to impress Ryder Cup captain, Davis Love III to earn a spot on the Ryder Cup team.  The first three picks will be made after next week’s BMW Championship at Crooked Stick in Indiana.  There are plenty of story lines to keep up with in Boston.

Before we talk about contenders let’s take a look at the Top 10 in the FedEx Cup standings:

Rank Player Points
1 Patrick Reed 3,575
2 Jason Day 3,195
3 Dustin Johnson 2,907
4 Adam Scott 2,523
5 Jordan Spieth 2,255
6 Emiliano Grillo 2,089
7 Russell Knox 2.039
8 Justin Thomas 1,802
9 Brandt Snedeker 1,801
10 Phil Mickelson 1,758

The race at the top is tight after Patrick Reed won last week.  We expect to see a new leader after the Deutsche Bank Championship.  There are several players in the top 10 that are playing well coming into the week.  Jason Day had a strong performance with a T4 finish.  Emiliano Grillo played great over the weekend and finished T2.  Adam Scott was T4 with Day.  TPC Boston is another tough par 71 and it will take some strong play Sunday and Monday (don’t forget about the Labor Day finish) to get a win.

GolfMonger Picks:

  1. Jason Day – Very much a “horse for the course” at TPC Boston.  In nine appearances day has six Top 20 finishes.  Three of which are Top 10s.  His putter was red hot at Bethpage Black and he has the look of being ready to go on a run of great play again.  That would be bad news for the rest of the field.
  2. Dustin Johnson – Another win would make him a lock for Player of the Year honors.  It also would make him tough to catch for the $10M at the end of the playoffs.  DJ has played well at the DBC in the past (T4 in 2009 & 2012).  Granted he has been quiet as of late, but we think it is time for him to gear it back up again.
  3. Emiliano Grillo – Not many playing better than this young man from Argentina over the last few weeks.  He had a great showing at the Olympics in Rio and is coming off a T2 at The Barclays.  He is on the cusp of getting his 2nd PGA TOUR victory.  We think it could be this week.  Why not?

Wild Card Pick – The Ryder Cup is a very hot topic right now.  Team USA set its Top 8 players as of Sunday.  DL3 will announce his first three Captain’s picks next week in Indiana.  The European Team has already named its team.  Captain Darren Clarke announced his three picks.  Russell Knox was NOT one of them.  Many people thought he would be…including us.  For that reason we feel Russell will want to go out and show Capt. Clarke what he missed out on.  Expect a great weekend for the 20th ranked player in the world.
