Washington Wild Things: Pair Of Alumni In 2017 WBC

The officials of the 2017 World Baseball Classic disclosed team rosters Wednesday, Feb. 8 and a pair of Washington Wild Things alumni will be part of the tournament. The WBC throws the opening pitch Monday, March 6 with First Round action in Seoul, South Korea.

Former Wild Thing and current member of the Los Angeles Dodgers Vidal Nuno is part of the pitching staff for Team Mexico. The 5-foot-11 and 210-pound left-hander was a member of the Red, Black, and White the first month of the 2011 season. The native of National City, California assembled a 2-3 record and 2.83 ERA while striking out 34 over six starts. The next move was Nuno’s contract being obtained by the New York Yankees. He participated in 126 Major League contests for the Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Seattle Mariners. The M’s traded the 29-year-old southpaw to the Dodgers in November for catcher Carlos Ruiz.

Mexico opens against Italy in Game 1 of the Pool D group of teams Thursday, March 9 at Estadio Charros de Jalisco. The facility is in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico.

Team Australia has one-time Washington outfielder Mitchell Dening on their roster for the tourney. The 28-year-old from New South Wales, Australia played in 15 games for the Wild Things in 2012. He contributed nine hits in 47 at-bats. The 6-foot-1 and 209-pound outfielder spent the 2015 campaign with the Tokyo Yakult Swallows in Nippon Professional Baseball’s Central League in Japan. Dening helped the Swallows to their first Central League pennant in 14 years as they went on to face the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks, champions of the Pacific League, in the Japan Series.

Australia meets Japan on the diamond in Game 3 of the Pool B bracket Wednesday, March 8 at the Tokyo Dome in Japan. All of the match-ups of the 2017 World Baseball Classic are on the MLB Network.

From The Clipboard: Washington made use pf their 2017 contract options in December on pitchers Devon Davis, Trevor Foss, Joe Ravert, Matt Snyder, Kolin Stanley, Luke Wilkins, and Ernesto Zaragoza. Also included were catchers John Fidanza and Kyle Pollock; infielders Brandon Bixler, Leon Byrd, and Ryne Willard; outfielders Justin Garcia, Quinnton Mack, and Ricky Rodriguez.

The Wild Things come together with their fans Saturday, April 15 for the first annual Sip Away Tax Day. The craft beer, wine, and whiskey tasting event hours are 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
