After playing just awful against the worst team in the Eastern Conference over the weekend, the Pens would get Big goals from their biggest players. Sidney Crosby would score the game winner and Malkin would get the insurance. What was odd is that it took place on a night that the two of them would spend way too much time in the penalty box. Final score in Carolina, Pens 3 Canes 1.
Matt Murray rebounded from a poor outing over the weekend against Detroit by stopping 29 of 30 shots. His defense did not show up which helped lead to that 5-2 loss. Mike Sullivan was looking for his guys to respond in a big way in Charlotte last night and that is just what they did.
Scott Wilson would score first for the Pens early in the first period. Then both Sid and Geno would take turns going into the penalty box over the next 25 minutes. Carolina would tie the game up about 6 minutes later.
During the second period, on one of the Pens Power Play opportunities, they would get a goal by Sidney Crosby to put the Pens up 2-1. That lead would hold till later in the third when Malkin would score off of a feed from Carl Hagelin.
Pittsburgh played one of the worst games of the season over the weekend at home. Something they have not done much all season. This team looked tired and just generally outplayed against Detroit. They turned in a much better game last night and were the better team.
Looking Ahead: Because of the defensive injuries, the Pens will more than likely make a move before the trade deadline passes. Most are saying we could see the Pens move Fleury to get defense in return. I am not convinced that happens but at this point it is their best trading piece. A Stanley Cup winning goalie is hard to find, and many teams are looking for net help. What the Pens get in return is the question. What isn’t the question is the fact that with the injuries on defense including Maatta, they need to sure up that end of the ice if they want to repeat.
