Coming off their Northeast Conference Championship, the Robert Morris University women’s basketball team (22-10 / 14-4 NEC) travel to Purcell Pavilion Friday, March 17 to battle the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish (30-3 / 15-1 ACC) in the opening round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. They come together to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.ET. Here are quotes and comments about the contest from both squads.
Colonials head coach Charlie Buscaglia talked to Omari Sankofa II from the Post-Gazette about taking the court against Notre Dame, “They’re very, very well coached. They play with a lot of fundamentals but they also have a lot of athleticism. It wasn’t so long ago that it was them and [Connecticut] that everybody was talking about, it was 1A and 1B. They recruit at a very high level and they play with a lot of fundamentals. They play with a style that’s tough. They’re strong, there’s no question about it.”
Senior guard Janee Brown, who led the team with 114 assists this season and owns the Colonials record for games played at 128, had to sit out the NEC Tournament. She commented on her availability to Jerry DiPaola of the Tribune-Review for the match-up with the Fighting Irish, “Hopefully, I’ll be ready to do a little something. I’m staying positive.”
RMU faced Notre Dame before in the tournament back in 2014. The 2017 NEC Tournament Most Valuable Player, senior guard Anna Niki Stamolamprou chatted with Jasper Wilson at the Beaver County Times on facing the Irish for the second time in her career, “It’s going to be a completely different game. I’m excited, though. We’re just have to take whatever is thrown at us.”
Ken Klimek of the NDinsider.com has this from Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw at the ND selection show viewing party, “This is ideal for us and our fans. We’re playing on St. Patrick’s Day, hopefully a good omen for the Irish. We will turn our attention to Robert Morris in about five minutes.”
McGraw feels her team’s trio of losses this season has the Irish ready for the adversity of the tournament. She spoke with Tom Coyne of the Associated Press, “We’ve been in some real battles and I think it really helped. I think the losses that we had, especially the Tennessee game, really made us better.”
