Pittsburgh Pirate: Minor League Notebook

First off, here is a list of the Pirates top 30 prospects.

Indianapolis Indians: The Indians have started the season struggling mightily with an all to familiar reason… They are just not scoring runs.  Currently they are 4-12 and near the bottom in every hitting stat.   They have limited talent in Indy right now with regards to hitters, although the Pirates best prospect Austin Meadows is down there putting in time and trying to get acclimated to triple A. Currently he is batting around .200 and has struggled to start this season.  The Indians have three starters with an era at or below three, including Steven Brault, Josh Lindblom, and Tyler Eppler.   Brault is a lefty that has been in Pittsburgh before and resembles what the Pirates would get out of Locke.   Maybe a bit better, but very similar in the fact that they have to rely on location because he is not a hard thrower.  Eppler was drafted a couple of seasons ago and has worked his way up quick. Currently the only starter on the team with a win, and has an era of 1.06 allowing just 2 runs in three starts.

Many of the issues this Indy team is dealing with is the trickle down effect of the big clubs issues.  The Pirates have added many of the Indians players to their current roster to start the season and because of that, Indianapolis is waiting on the next crop to move up. Speaking of the next crop…

Altoona Curve: is currently 9-6 and leading their division.  They have 5 batters above the .300 mark and three starting pitchers below a three era.  Currently, Kevin Kramer is leading the team batting .378 in his first 13 games with 3 homers and 7 RBI.  They also have Edwin Espinal, Elvis Escobar, and Chris Diaz all batting at or above that line.  Wondering where Major Prospect Kevin Newman falls?   He is the short stop of the future and is batting .286 with a great on base percentage.  Third baseman Wyatt Mathisen is also close batting .294 in those 13 games, although only 34 at bats.

AS far as pitching goes Alex McRae is 2-0 with an era 2.16, Tanner Anderson 1-1 with a 2.20 era and finally Austin Coley has no decisions but an era at 2.76.  Coley leads the team with 14 strike outs a lower walk total.

Bradenton – At this point, they are leading the Florida State League South Division at 9-8.  As per usual, that is a hitters league and most of the starters are at, near or above the .300 mark.  The Pitching staff is not putting up great numbers including Mitch Keller who is one of the Pirates coveted minor league prospects. Those that are pitching well include Pedro Vasquez, Dario Agrazal, and Logan Sendelbach all are sporting era’s below three.   Taylor Hearns who is another one of the Pirates top prospects also struggling similarly to Keller.

The hitters are really banging down there right now including Christian Kelley at .317, Kevin Krause, and Will Craig.   Krause is a catcher that currently has a slugging percentage well into the .800 range, with three home runs and 7 RBI.   He has an OPS of 1.239.
