The Penguins would get 2 goals from Sid and a late third period goal from Nick Bonino that would break a 2-2 tie to lift the Pens over the Caps in our Nations Capital. But it would Be Marc-Andre Fleury that would steal the show in the third as he would hold the fort repelling shot after shot. The Final score, Pittsburgh 3 Washington 2.
Sidney Crosby netted two goals in the first minute of the second period. The Pens would give up the lead as Washington would fight back late in the second and early in the third. With the game tied, Nick Bonino showed why he is a big game player as he would take a breakaway pass from Scott Wilson and bury it behind Holtby to give the Pens a 3-2 lead late in the third period.
The first period was clearly just a feeling out period as both teams took limited shots. The Caps out shot the Pens 6-4 in the first period.
After Sid scored twice early in the second, Ovechkin would bury a long range shot behind Fleury. Ovi played well, although let his emotions get away with him late in the third when he took a cheap shot at Fleury hip checking him into the net as the Caps continued the deluge of shots in the period.
Fleury stopped 16 shots in the third period, the Pens defense blocked an additional 20+ shots for the game. It seemed like they blocked that many in the third period alone.
Jake Guentzel had himself a great game as he would not only get an assist, but also probably one of the biggest saves of the game early on as he would help Fleury in the net.
Washington had 83 shot attempts in the game. Expect more of the same in the second game of series.
