View From The Loo: Dustin Johnson On and Off Course Distractions Could Derail Season

Dustin Johnson suffered a back injury that forced him to withdrawal from the Masters.   Since that time Dustin Johnson has played in 5 events with only 6 rounds in the 60’s.   Two of the tournaments he did not even make the cut and that includes both the Memorial and the US Open. His family grew by one the week of the US Open as Paulina Gretzky, Johnson’s Fiance gave birth to their second child.

Although the birth of a child is a pleasant distraction, Dustin really has only played well in one tournament, since that injury.   That was at the Wells Fargo where he finished 2nd.  He has not been in contention since and has shown no signs of getting back on a roll.

Not sure if there are lingering affects of the injury, or it was the loss time, or just that there have been just that many consecutive distractions that he is just not on his game.  In any event, The 2017 Major Season is turning into a forgettable portion of the 2017 season for Dustin.

The Truly odd thing, is that if you do a quick glance at his stats, you would find he is still first overall in the Fed Ex Cup Standings.   He won several tournaments early on the 2016-2107 season which has helped provide that cushion.

For years we have been waiting for Dustin to push through that ceiling and be the great player everyone knew he could be.  For a year, that happened but before the 2017 Major season would get started, his run may have ended prematurely.

Dustin has the ability to play himself out of such a slump, but the fact is, we have not seen that part of his game.  The players that struggle to get those big wins for years, then finally break through end up facing moments like this.  And it could be this moment that defines how he will be looked at going forward.

A Player that generates as much torque and club head speed as he does, coupled with a back injury that sidelined him for a couple weeks, could make for a long term problem.   No one wants to see Johnson not return to the form after what we saw from him last year, but that can happen and has happened to a great many really good players.

He is off again this week and will not participate in the Quicken Loans PGA Event which means he will only have a couple of events before the Open Championship in July.  His best results were in 2011 at Royal St George’s where he finished 2nd. Since that event, his closest run at the Open Championship would be 9th.

Not sure what the remainder of the 2017 season holds for him, and we all know what predictions are good for.  With that said, I would not at all be surprised for this season to continue sliding away from Dustin.   With as much as he has going on, on the course and at home, expect one could expect Dustin to struggle getting back to Championship form.   From what I have seen in recent weeks, I would not be surprised to see him not win again this year and really not contend at a high level for the remainder of the season.

Then again…. you know what predictions are good for….
