US Senior Open: Triplett Scores Day 1 Lead and Other News

So I predicted that this course would have more bite than the one we saw in Wisconsin 2 weeks ago.  So far, I could not have been more wrong.  If you combine the Moist Receptive Greens, wider than average fairways, and the best players in this age bracket in the world what you get in this case is another course that has bowed down to the field.

The leader after day 1 Kirk Triplett who missed a short birdie putt on 9 that would have given him a record -9 par 61. If you look at the scoreboard, 56 players out of the 156 player field is at Even or Better.   Olin Browne is one back at -7 under with Doug Garwood 2 back at -6 under. There are 6 players tied at -5 under that include Kenny Perry, Tom Lehman, and Duffy Waldorf.

Your low Amateurs right now are Matt Sughrue and Robby Funk tied at -1.

Some of the big names not mentioned in the top would include Bernhard Langer who finished at -3 under.  Then there is both Lee Janzen and Fred Couples tied at -2 and Corey Pavin at -4 under. This course, the way it is playing right now if perfect for Paven, so if the greens stay relatively the way they are, expect Corey to move up and compete in this tournament.   Duffy Waldorf scored the tournaments only Ace thus far on the third hole, 136 yard par 3 with a Pitching wedge.

As for your leader, he would card 2 birdies and an eagle on the front nine and 4 birdies on the back.  There were no blemishes on the card at all.  The eagle on the 4th hole, a 341 yard hole that Triplett would hole out from 115 with his 9 iron.  The 62 ties Loren Roberts record from 2006 when he shoot a 62 in the third round.

As we look at the scoring for day 1, it is clear that the weather man will play a factor in the remainder of the tournament.  The current forecast calls for dry and hot for the remainder of the week.  There could be some severe weather on Sunday, but other wise hot and dry which means the greens will firm up and the course will have a little teeth to it finally.

This is two straight tournaments that the USGA has taken a course that has an ability to be difficult and turn it into a scoring track.   The rough is difficult to come out of, but right now what is more difficult than coming out of that rough is actually hitting into it.  I am sure the players are enjoying this, but from a fans perspective this could be any tournament location on any given weekend  with the scoring we are seeing right now.
