Pittsburgh Riverhounds: Quick Review Of 0-0 Tie With Rochester Rhinos

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds (5-7-7, 22 points) and Rochester Rhinos (6-3-8, 26 points) each put up a clean sheet Saturday, July 22 and finished their United Soccer League meeting in a 0-0 tie at Capelli Sport Stadium in Western New York. It was the Black and Gold’s seventh clean sheet this season and their most since the 2013 campaign.

This match is the first of three between these Eastern Conference competitors and the only one taking place in the Empire State. The Rhinos own a 12-3-3 advantage in this series, going back to 2011. After this latest encounter, Rochester is in seventh place in the East while Pittsburgh is 11th, two slots away from the last playoff spot.

Black and Gold goalkeeper Trey Mitchell claimed a pair of saves in picking up his fifth shutout this season. The center back pairing of Jamal Jack and Tobi Adewole put up seven clearances each. The Hounds collected a team total of 23 clearances to the Rhinos 12.

Rhinos goalkeeper Tomas Gomez tallied four saves as he took the USL lead in clean sheets with his eighth of the season in just 15 games. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound goalie from Montemorelos, Mexico was the league’s  Golden Glove winner in 2016.

Pittsburgh has four goals total over their last five contests while Rochester has three scores. What followers of both squads are asking themselves near the end of July, “is the offense making a return to the pitch anytime soon?”

Hounds head coach Dave Brandt spoke with John Krysinsky of dkpittsburghsports.com last week about his team’s toughest challenge for the rest of this season, “Belief. The biggest thing that fuels belief is results. Winning. We’ve just been flirting all season for the most part. It wears on you when you don’t get the number of wins you want to. But, we’re close.”
