Change Coming in Foxboro?: ESPN Set to Release “Power Struggle” Piece on the Patriots

On January 5th, ESPN will release an article detailing the power struggle between Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and Robert Kraft in order to determine who deserves the most credit for the Patriots’ dynasty.

According to @bruceallen via Twitter, “the article claims that the rift between Kraft, Brady, and Belichick is so severe that many Patriots feel this is the last year together for the trio. Also that Brady went to Kraft to force Belichick to trade Jimmy Garoppolo. ESPN is planning a full day of promotion tomorrow for the article and its author Seth Wickersham.

Wow, now these are some serious allegations against Brady that can most definitely damage his reputation and ultimately, his legacy as a Patriot. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the allegations are true because there is a chance that Brady could have seen Garoppolo as a threat for the starting job due to the age difference and the outlook on the Patriots future. Back in April, Belichick had absolutely no interest in trading Garoppolo, but six months later he was traded for only a second round pick. That being said, it is hard to believe that Belichick was not under heavy influence, or was even forced to trade Garoppolo. At the same time, they very well could be false, as Brady has proven to be a team player in the past.

It is a really sticky situation for the Patriots, they could have done a few things. First, they could have held on to Garoppolo for the rest of the season and then sat down with Brady at the end of the season and suggest that he retire. Second, they could have taken the risk of trading Brady in an effort to secure a good quarterback for the next decade. Don’t forget, great quarterbacks are hard to come by nowadays. If the Patriots decided to do this, Brady’s legacy as a Patriot would have come to an end, and that could have been too much for the Patriots fan base to handle. The thought of Brady retiring on another team is mind-boggling at this point. Third, they could have (and did) traded Garoppolo to see if Brady is still in it for the long run.

We all know how it turned out, and nobody will really know if it will turn out in the Patriots favor until Garoppolo’s prime years in the league. What we do know is that ESPN is getting ready to unleash chaos on the Patriots once again. A lot of Patriot fans will not want to believe what they see in the article, as they claim ESPN started deflategate, but the allegations against Brady do make some sense considering Belichick’s move to trade Garoppolo after he had already made it clear that he was off limits. Some things don’t add up, and tension between Brady and Belichick seems to be heating up even more, right after it came out that Belichick is not too fond of Brady’s trainer Alex Guerrero.

This could very well be the last year we see Kraft, Brady, and Belichick together. Not to mention, Josh McDaniels and Matt Patricia may be taking head coaching jobs at the end of this season. The Patriots rebuilding phase may be coming sooner than we all think.
