Sidney Crosby is currently sitting on goal 399. His 400th goal will be an anticipated milestone for perhaps the greatest hockey player of his generation. He should get goal 400 very soon, maybe even tomorrow night. Sid being Sid will probably pose for a picture with the puck say some words to the media and go about his business. Meanwhile, over in the NBA, Lebron James just surpassed the 30,000 point mark this past week. However, before he actually hit his milestone, James took to Instagram, writing a congratulatory message to himself for the upcoming accomplishment. That’s not a typo. Lebron was 7 points short of reaching said milestone and wanted congratulated himself- humble I know. Said Instagram post was worded as followed.
Wanna be one of the first to Congratulate you on this accomplishment/achievement tonight that you’ll reach! Only a handful has reach/seen it too and while I know it’s never been a goal of yours from the beginning try(please try) to take a moment for yourself on how you’ve done it! The House you’re about to be apart of has only 6 seats in it(as of now) but 1 more will be added and you should be very proud and honored to be invited inside. There’s so many people to thank who has help this even become possible(so thank them all) and when u finally get your moment(alone) to yourself smile, look up to the higher skies and say THANK YOU! So with that said, Congrats again Young King!
While Sid’s milestone is nowhere near as monumental as LeBron’s 30,000 points; how they carry themselves in times of spotlight is important. This stunt shows differences between these two superstars of their respective sport. This post was completely inappropriate considering the state of the Cavs; they are in a tailspin. Fans are upset. A player only meeting was recently held to try to right the ship. Lebron’s patting of his own back shows the disconnect he has with the status of his team. The Penguins are likewise in a tough spot currently. They are not a shoe for the playoffs as it currently stands and have roster that needs tweaked before the playoffs. We all know how Sidney Crosby is going to probably treat his milestone 400th goal. You can almost bet he’s not going to go out of his way to soak in the fan and media adulation, in fact he’ll likely deflect. He’ll just continue playing hockey. Team first, that’s the Crosby way. Lebron James on the other hand showed us yet again it’s about him all the time.
The NHL doesn’t do Crosby any favors allowing the state of the game to abuse him on the ice. Combine that with the way hockey media and many opposing fans paint Crosby as being a “crybaby”, “whiner” or “soft” Sid faces more negativity than the face of the league should. The NBA insulates Lebron from harsh criticism through its media partners. ESPN/ABC/TBS deflect any negative press or silences any pundits that dare criticize him. Crosby would die for that same buffer. Seeing the differences between these two icons shows how fortunate the NHL is to have Sidney Crosby as the face of their league. He may not have a charisma, marketability and “coolness” of Lebron, but as role model and overall ambassador of the game Crosby is unmatched by his counterpart. Pittsburgh and NHL is shown once again how lucky we are to have Sidney Crosby.
