The Cardinals wanted Mathieu to either take a pay cut or restructure his contract, but the Honey Badger stood firm and forced the team to release him. The Cardinals will save $4.8 million against the cap with the move or $11 million if they designate Mathieu as a post-June 1st cut. Mathieu turns 26 in May and should have a hot market after he led the NFL in snaps in 2017 and played all 16 games.
“There’s many ways you could restructure a contract instead of just taking money out of my pocket,” Mathieu said. “Taking money out of my pocket, I don’t like how that feels.”
Asking Tyrann Mathieu to take a paycut is more effective when you don't give Sam Bradford $20M for one year.
