Two of the more active teams this NFL offseason got together yesterday as the LA Rams and New England Patriots worked out a trade that sends Brandin Cooks and a 4th round pick to the Rams with a 1st and 6th round pick going to the Patriots. Bill Belichick continues his trend of moving guys in the final year of their deal. The Rams who lost Sammy Watkins in Free Agency to the Chiefs have now replaced him with Brandin Cooks. This trade makes sense from sides, and both teams get better right away.
The Rams continue to give Sean McVay and Jared Goff weapon to play with on offense. Cooks is joining the start studded list of players that have been added this offseason by GM Les Snead in hopes of taking the next step after going 11-5 and winning the NFC West last season. Cooks is entering his 5th season and his last season before he becomes a free agent. Cooks is looking to have his fourth straight season of at least 1,000 yards, and playing with a rising star in Jared Goff at QB and McVay Cooks could have his best season yet. Snaed trading his first round pick for Cooks a proven player is the right move for a team looking to win next season. Last season the Rams with Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, and Todd Gurley put up a league best 29.9 points per game and 3,831 yards in the air good for 10th best in the NFL. Now that offense adds another WR that can stretch the field along with Robert Woods. This also keeps Kupp in the slot and letting him play with two guys with speed like Woods and Cooks will open up the middle of field for Kupp. Cooks best season came in his second season in the NFL when he caught 84 balls for 1,138 yards and 9 TD’s. That season came when playing for another great offensive mind at coach and QB when he played with Brees and Payton. Brandin Cooks playing for McVay might see him get his first 100 catch and 10 TD season.
The Patriots add another first round pick by trading Cooks to LA. In the first two rounds of this upcoming draft the Patriots now have picks 1.23,1.31,2.11(43 overall) and pick 2.31 (63 overall). This is nothing new for Belichick as he loves to move a guy a year before he hits free agency. Belichick on this trade completely worked over the system and showed why he is the best. Last offseason the Patriots traded the 32nd overall pick for Cooks, and traded him for the 23rd overall pick such a Belichick move. Belichick and the Patriots improved his value by 9 picks in the draft. With four pick now in the first 64 picks the Patriots are able to add to their team however they see fit. Belichick the master of draft day trades now has two first round pick to play with when it comes to trade talks. And if there is someone he really wants he can use one of his two 2nd round picks. The draft has now become must see TV if you are a Patriots fan. History says at least one of those 1st round picks gets moved. In the end both teams got what they wanted and you can’t ask for anything else.
