Daane: MLB 6/6/19 Plays

June 6th MLB Picks

Reds @ Cardinals

Probable Starters: Tyler Mahle (Reds) vs. Miles Mikolas (Cardinals)

The Reds look to sweep the shortened series at Busch Stadium against the Cardinals who have been tough to beat in their home ballpark. The Cardinals are 19-13 at home this season and are backing their opening day starter Miles Mikolas in this matchup. Both teams head into this game with identical records in their past 10 games at 5-5. Mahle heads into this game with a (2-5, 4.26) and allowing nine runs in his last two starts while Mikolas (4-5, 4.41) has had two great starts in a row. In his last two outings, the right-hander has allowed four runs while striking out 12 in 14 innings pitched. The Cardinals offense has a .302 average against Mahle and will be led by Marcell Ozuna and Jose Martinez who both have career averages of .500 or better off the Reds starter. Jesse Winker and Eugenio Suarez look to lead the charge for the Reds offense as they have faired well in their careers against Mikolas in limited at-bats.

Reds

Last 10: 5-5

Away Record: 13-17

O/U: 23-35-2

Cardinals

Last 10: 5-5

Home Record: 19-13

O/U: 27-29-3

PICK: Cardinals & U 8.5

The Cardinals have been one of the best home teams in baseball this season and Mikolas looks to have put his early season struggles aside as of late which is why I am siding with the home team in this one.

Astros @ Mariners

Probable Starters: Justin Verlander (Astros) vs. Tommy Milone (Mariners)

The Houston Astros have been on fire as of late winning eight of their last 10, while the Mariners have been headed the opposite direction after looking like an offensive juggernaut in the first few weeks of the season. With Justin Verlander on the bump and the offensive support his team offers, this game is my lock of the night. Houston has the 2nd best road record in baseball at 20-12 while the Mariners have the 2nd worst home record at 12-21. Verlander (9-2, 2.27) will look to get to double digit wins for the 14th time in his career as he goes into battle against one of the better offenses in baseball with the key additions of Daniel Vogelbach and Domingo Santana leading the youth movement. Meanwhile, the 32-year-old southpaw Tommy Milone will look to pick up his second win in his fourth start of the season. The Astros are without three of their better players in Springer, Altuve and Correa, however, I believe that Verlander will be able to contain the Mariners enough to pick up his 10th win of the season.

Astros

Last 10: 8-2

Away Record: 20-12

O/U: 25-35-2

Mariners

Last 10: 2-8

Home Record: 12-21

O/U: 40-21-3

PICK: Astros

Verlander and the Astros will continue their hot play as of late with a win against the struggling Mariners. Look for this game to be a smooth sailing victory for the Astros as Verlander has dominant of late allowing just six runs in his last 30 innings pitched.

Record:

Yesterday’s Record: 3-1

All-Time Record: 3-1
