Daane: MLB Plays 6/7/19

June 7th MLB Picks

Dodgers @ Giants

Probable Starters: Clayton Kershaw vs. Drew Pomeranz

The Dodgers head into this divisional matchup as odds-on favorites against the last place Giants who will be looking to avenge struggles vs. Clayton Kershaw in his career. Kershaw has a 22-10 record and an astonishing 1.70 ERA in 248 innings through 40 starts against the Giants. This Giants have been struggling all season to produce at the plate and with Kershaw dealing as of late, it should be a similar theme in this one. Drew Pomeranz draws the tough matchup against Kershaw as he looks to overcome a dreadful start to 2019 posting a 1-8 record with an 8.08 ERA as he faces the 2nd best run producing offense in baseball. This battle between the 1st place Dodgers and 5th place Giants in Bruce Bochy’s last season at the helm should be a lopsided affair. Although, the Dodgers bats have been held to a .206 average against Pomeranz lifetime, I see a strong showing in this one as Cody Bellinger and Enrique Hernandez lead the charge for the visiting Dodgers. Bellinger has been the early favorite for MVP in large part to his brilliant defense to go along with his .370 average and 20 home runs on the year. Look for the Dodgers to claim the early lead in this one and never look back as their bats have been on fire as of late.

PICK: Dodgers

Orioles @ Astros

Probable Starters: Gabriel Ynoa vs. Gerrit Cole

This matchup between the Orioles and Astros is far from intriguing as the Astros boast the MLB’s most wins while the Orioles are clinging to the 2nd worst record in baseball. At Minute Maid Park, the Astros have been dominant as they have a 22-8 record in 30 games and look to build on that against an inferior opponent. After an extra inning game last night in Seattle, Gerrit Cole and the Astros look to take care of business in the first game of this series. Cole (5-5, 3.94) faces Gabriel Ynoa (0-2, 5.06) in this matchup where the Astros will be without three of their best players in Altuve, Springer, and Correa. Cole’s record and ERA this season don’t do justice to how dominant he has been this season as he is averaging a strikeout and a half per inning. The right-hander out of UCLA has been nothing but spectacular since joining Houston last season as he is 20-10 with an ERA just north of 3.  The Astros bats will be led by Alex Bregman in this one as he continues to tear the cover off the ball with his fellow superstars rehabbing from injury. Look for Gerrit Cole to continue his dominance while striking out more than eight batters in a lopsided victory against Baltimore.

PICK: Astros

Rockies @ Mets

Probable Starters: Antonio Senzatela vs. Jacob DeGrom

The Rockies head to Citi Field to take on the slumping Mets who will be running out their ace, Jacob DeGrom. The Mets enter play as the favorites, but the Rockies have been hitting their stride lately after a sluggish start to the 2019 campaign. As the favorite, the Mets are 17-15 this season as the Rockies are just 10-19 as underdogs. DeGrom (3-5, 3.49) has had a much different season than last year’s Cy Young campaign but has been pitching well of late allowing just four runs in his last 17 2/3 innings pitched. Antonio Senzatela (4-4, 5.33) has been stuck between being good and mediocre throughout his first three seasons in the majors which leads to me trending towards picking the Mets in this one. The Rockies aren’t the same offense on the road and coming into this one, they have a lackluster .184 average against DeGrom in his career. Look for the Mets to win the opening game of this series behind a strong start from DeGrom and their offense scoring just enough to sneak past the surging Rockies.
