June 8th MLB Picks

White Sox @ Royals

Probable Starters: Lucas Giolito vs. Brad Keller

The Chicago White Sox come into play with a 29-33 record while the Kansas City Royals are sitting in last place in the AL Central at 20-43. The Sox pitching staff has been off to a rough start to the season thus far allowing over 5 runs per game which is 20th in baseball. The one bright spot this season has been probable starter Lucas Giolito who posts an outstanding 8-1 record with a 2.54 ERA. In Giolito’s 11 starts on the season the Sox are 9-2 while averaging 4.27 runs per game. Kansas City will be playing behind Brad Keller who has struggled of late with his ERA jumping from 2.64 to 4.50 while going 1-6 in his last eight starts. On the offensive side, look for Leury Garcia to be a difference maker in this one as he enters play with a career .467 average in 15 at-bats against Keller. Meanwhile, the White Sox remain unbeaten in 9 career starts against the Royals for Giolito as he is 5-0 with a 2.43 ERA against the last place Royals. In this matchup, I see the White Sox continuing their winning ways behind Giolito who has been unbeatable against the Royals and off to a stellar start to his 2019 campaign.

PICK: White Sox

Diamondbacks @ Blue Jays

Probable Starters:  Zack Greinke vs. Aaron Sanchez

In this interleague matchup between the D-Backs and Blue Jays, both teams will be backing strong starting pitchers for their respective teams. Zack Greinke will be taking on Aaron Sanchez who have both been off to good starts to the season. Greinke (6-2, 3.09) heads into this game riding a stretch of allowing just 13 runs in his last 58.1 innings pitched. On the other side of the diamond, Sanchez (3-6, 3.95) started off the season (3-1) but has been unable to get a victory in his last 7 starts for a struggling Jays team. Toronto’s offense has been brutal this season scoring the 4th fewest runs in the MLB while slumping to a 2-8 record in their last 10 and 23-40 overall. Surprisingly, the D-Backs have been better on the road this season and I see that continuing in this matchup between these two teams. Greinke will continue his impressive stretch of pitching while his offense picks up enough runs to overcome the home team in this one. Pick the D-Backs and the under in this one as both teams struggle to score at times

Blue Jays

PICK: Diamondbacks & Under 8.5

Twins @ Tigers

Probable Starters: Kyle Gibson vs. Undecided

The Minnesota Twins look to continue their torrid start to the season against its divisional opponent Detroit Tigers. Coming into this Saturday matchup, the Twins hoist the best road record in baseball at 23-11 and being the only team with 20 wins on the road against a Tigers team that has been struggling to win ballgames this season. Detroit’s offense has scored the fewest runs in baseball while allowing the over 5 runs per game. With no probable starter, the Tigers will likely use an opener in this one which has been successful for teams in the past, the Twins have been the better team this season and I see it continuing today. The Twins will be riding the long time Twin, Kyle Gibson who enters play with a 6-2 record and 3.75 ERA. Gibson is 4-1 in his last 5 starts while the Twins offense has produced over 6 runs per game in his starts this season. Look for the Twins to win this ballgame with a convincing victory in Detroit this afternoon.

Twins

Away Record: 23-11

O/U: 32-27-2

Tigers

Last 10: 4-6

Home Record: 10-20

O/U: 25-32-2

PICK: Twins

Nationals @ Padres

Probable Starters: Max Scherzer vs. Eric Lauer

The San Diego Padres are playing host to the Washington Nationals in this battle between teams from opposite coasts of the United States. Both teams have been mediocre this season with the Padres being 33-31 and Nationals off to a brutal 28-35 start after losing their superstar Bryce Harper in free agency. Max Scherzer has been solid this season posting a 3.06 ERA with a 3-5 record. In 13 starts this season the Nationals are just 3-10 this season while only scoring 3.46 runs per game in Scherzer’s starts. Scherzer’s opponent Eric Lauer in his second season has compiled a 5-4 record with a 4.18 ERA in 12 starts. Although, Washington has been off to a surprisingly bad start, they will get back to winning games as their ace takes the mound today. Look for Scherzer to perform well on the road as his team comes away with a road victory.

Nationals

Last 10: 6-4

Away Record: 13-20

O/U: 32-26-4

Padres

Last 10: 5-5

Home Record: 18-18

O/U:  31-28-4

PICK: Nationals & over 7.5

Dodgers @ Giants

Probable Starters:  Rich Hill vs. Jeff Samardzija

In game two of this divisional matchup between rivals, the Giants look to win the series as the 1st place Dodgers look to avoid losing three in a row. Cody Bellinger and the Dodgers look to get back on track as their offense has been pivotal to their early season success. They lead the National League in runs scored and rank 3rd in all of baseball while off to a 43-21 record. Rich Hill takes the bump looking for his third win on the season in his eighth start in an injury riddled season. Hill is 2-1 on the season with a 2.25 ERA as he faces Jeff Samardzija who carries a 3-4 record into this one. Samardzija coming off a victory in his last start looks to get back to .500 on the season as his Giants take the field looking for victory 12 at home this season. As Kershaw entered play last night with great success against the Giants, Hill is in a similar position posting a career 7-2 record with a 2.26 ERA in 14 starts. This game should be another good ballgame as both pitchers enter play having good seasons, but the Dodgers offense will overcome their struggles from last night and hit themselves to victory tonight.
