June 9th MLB Picks

Braves @ Marlines

Probable Starters: Max Fried vs. Pablo Lopez

The Atlanta Braves square off against the Miami Marlins as the Marlins look to avoid their fourth straight loss and sweep against their divisional opponent. The Braves are sitting just two games back of the first place Marlins after a stellar 2018 season that saw them win the division for the first time since 2013. Largely in part to their youth movement in Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuna Jr. paired with one of the best hitters in baseball, Freddie Freeman. Max Fried (7-3, 3.68) looks to bounce back after a few rough starts against the worst offense in baseball as Atlanta heads to Marlins Park today. Friend, in his third season in the majors, has been off to a great start and in many ways been the Braves ace to this point. The Marlins will have Pablo Lopez on the bump looking to avoid being swept at home as he enters with a 4-5 record and 4.52 ERA. Lopez has been brilliant in his last two starts allowing just one run in 12 innings but look for that hot streak to end today against the surging Braves. Atlanta has the been one of the better teams on the road this season and going up against one of the worst teams in baseball, I see them coming away with the victory behind Fried this afternoon.

PICK: Braves

Twins @ Tigers

Probable Starters: Jake Odorizzi vs. Ryan Carpenter

After a tough loss yesterday for the Twins, they look to take the series against the Tigers in the rubber match of this one. They will have one of their better starters on the bump in Jake Odorizzi as he enters play with a 8-2 record and an ERA south of 2. Odorizzi has won eight starts in a row after starting the season 0-2 and the Twins have been 9-3 in his starts this season. Meanwhile, the Tigers look to win their first series since the middle of May as Ryan Carpenter takes the bump for them. Carpenter is currently 1-2 with a 6.23 ERA in five starts this season. His last three starts have been solid only allowing five runs in 17 innings pitched after his first two starts were abysmal. Minnesota currently sits in 1st place in the AL Central with a commanding 9.5 game lead over the Indians in large part to their offense thus far in 2019. They have been an offensive juggernaut in leading the league in most of the offensive categories which is why I am siding with them in this one. Look for the Twins to win this game convincingly after dropping the 2nd game of the series yesterday.
